India finished fourth at Glasgow 2026 with 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze [3][15][17]. One report called this India's lowest Commonwealth Games medal tally in 24 years [2]. That report also said India fell below the 50-medal mark for the first time in that stretch [1].

India did not stay in fourth the whole time. On Day 9 of the Games, India added 16 medals, including 8 golds, and jumped from tenth to fourth place [18].

At Birmingham 2022, India again finished fourth. Most sources give India 60 medals: 21 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze [5][6][16]. One other source gives 61 medals: 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze [9]. Because the sources differ, the comparison with 2026 is not exact.

How the two editions compare

The overall total dropped from either 60 or 61 medals in 2022 to 39 in 2026 [3][5][9]. Gold medals fell from 21 or 22 to 13, silver rose slightly from 16 to 17, and bronze fell from 23 to 9 [3][5][9][16].

There is a clear reason for part of the drop. The pared-back Glasgow 2026 programme removed nine sports that were at Birmingham, including wrestling, badminton, table tennis and hockey. Those sports had contributed 25 of India's 61 medals in 2022 [10]. A comparison of sports that were in both editions reported 31 medals across those common sports, with the 2026 figure described as partial, or "so far" [11].
